Field Trip to New Jersey's Coastal Dunes and Maritime Forest

Wednesday July 15

Click here for a list of the species observed on this field trip

Where:  Either Island Beach State Park or Sandy Hook and Seven Presidents Park (depending on wind and weather conditions)

What:  Join botanist Linda Kelly, and dune invasive plant specialist, Louise Wootton, on a trip into some of New Jersey's few remaining natural barrier island habitats.  We will explore a variety native dune and maritime forest communities and look at some of the many invasive species in these habitats.  Over the course of the day we hope to visit dunegrass communities, central coast beach heather shrublands, bayberry and beach plum shrublands and American holly, bayberry forests.  If there is sufficient time and interest, we may also stop at some of the unique wetlands associated with the coastal dune ecosystem, such as interdunal swales and bayside tidal marshes.

Cost: The price quoted on the registration page is based on a group of 20 persons and includes transportation costs (bus), park entrance fees, a boxed lunch and lots of ice water! The field trip may be cancelled up to three days prior to the tour at the discretion of the conference organizers if a "critical mass" of participants is not reached, or if adverse weather conditions seem likely for that date.

NOTE:  Parts of this trip will involve hiking over soft sand and in habitats potentially harboring ticks and / or poison ivy.  In addition, dune habitats offer few opportunities for shady respites from July's heat.  Please wear appropriate clothing. We recommend sneakers or hiking boots, light fabrics with long sleeves and pants rather than shorts.  We also recommend wearing sunglasses and a hat.  Also, during the summer months, we share New Jersey's coastal habitats with a wide array of biting insects.  We will have large bottles of fly spray on hand, but if you have a favored anti-bug elixir, please feel free to bring your own along too.
